The Internet of the future moves very close when TDC NET – as the first company in Denmark – begins to significantly increase the speeds of its fiber network for households. In June, the possibility of up to 2Gbit/s in the entire network will be opened, and partly for up to 10Gbit/s fiber networks to the addresses where TDC NET has already rolled out the technology. With the ultra-high speeds, TDC NET will enable future digital solutions.

When it comes to the internet of the future, TDC NET is now taking a pioneering step and is the first company in Denmark to launch a 10 Gbit/s fiber network for private customers. Denmark's consumption of data is significantly increasing. We Danes surf, stream, game, save in the 'cloud' and generally use the internet to such an extent that we increase our data consumption by up to 25 percent each year. As the country's largest supplier of digital infrastructure, TDC NET has taken this development into consideration and will introduce new, higher speeds on its fiber network in a few months. On 10 June, 2Gbit/s fiber networks will thus be introduced as an option throughout the network, while 10Gbit/s fiber networks will initially be possible where the technology has already been rolled out – that is, selected addresses in a number of larger cities such as Roskilde, Helsingør and Hillerød. Ongoing, more and more people will be able to be offered the option as the fiber network is expanded to the higher speeds. Most end customers will need to upgrade their router at the same time.

"It is part of our DNA to help support and future-proof the country's digital development. That is why we were the first in Denmark to introduce 5G technology, and now we believe that the time is ripe again to move some digital fence posts. This initiative confirms our position as a market leader in digital infrastructure and our commitment to driving digital development forward,” says TDC NET Commercial Director Robert Dogonowski, and continues:

"There are fantastic development opportunities in fiber technology that are just waiting to be realised. Today we are therefore starting to prepare our fiber network to deliver the ultra-high speeds that we as a society will need in the coming years. Already from 10 June, we will give internet providers the opportunity to offer their customers access to our 10Gbit/s fiber network, where we have already rolled out the technology. At a high pace thereafter, connection in more and more areas will become possible. Most end customers will just have to remember that they will also have to upgrade their router to benefit from the new speeds.”

Robert Dogonowski also emphasizes that fiber technology not only trumps mobile broadband in terms of speed, but also offers a stability that is unmatched. In addition, it is more sustainable and energy efficient when moving large amounts of data.

Higher speeds pave way for development

Although TDC NET sees that the need for much higher speeds is on the way, the decision on 10G is also about ensuring the digital transformation of our society and enabling a development that we cannot yet fully imagine.

"It's not just a matter of offering higher speeds here and now - it's about setting the stage for tomorrow's digital discoveries and innovations. As the country's oldest infrastructure company, for us it is also about taking responsibility for the future and taking on the 'enabler' role we can play for society," says Robert Dogonowski and elaborates:

"We have the opportunity to expand our infrastructure, and thus make it possible for others to develop solutions that take advantage of the high speeds and great stability. We can already see some of the areas that can benefit greatly from this initiative – such as AI, VR, cloud solutions and maybe even digital health – but I am also sure that in five to ten years we will see new digital solutions developed as a result of the 10 Gbit/s fiber network. Including some that we cannot even imagine today," says Robert Dogonowski.

FACTS

  • From 10 June, TDC NET gives internet providers the opportunity to let customers in a number of areas access the company's 10 Gbit/s fiber network. At the same time, it will be possible to order the download speed of 2 Gbit/s, which is a doubling of the speed, throughout TDC NET's fiber network.
  • The product 2/1 Gbit/s is delivered on GPON technology and is available to all 628,000 addresses on TDC NET's fiber network immediately. On the 2/1 Gbit/s product, the customer will be able to experience speeds of up to 1.8/0.9 Gbit/s on their internet connection.
  • The product 10Gbit/s fiber network is delivered via the XGS PON technology, which is the latest technology in the field and which TDC NET can initially deliver to 35 percent of the company's Fiber network. During 2024 and 2025, the option will become available in further parts of TDC NET's fiber network. On the 10Gbit/s product, the customer will be able to experience speeds of up to 8.5/6 Gbit/s on their Internet connection.
  • Most customers will need to upgrade to a newer router to enjoy the higher speeds.
  • • Data infrastructure companies in countries such as Italy, France and the Netherlands have already introduced 10Gbit/s fiber networks.
