Make STOP a habit

Specifically, you need to get into the habit of stopping - considering the situation - examining the conditions - correcting any unsafe conditions and then getting on with the job.

This doesn't have to take a long time, but it should become a good habit so that we act BEFORE the accident happens!

STOP - take a pastille - and risk assess the task you are about to perform

STOP in your everyday life

Below you will find examples of situations where you can use STOP.

Secure your cargo
Before transporting goods with the truck, check if the load is properly secured. Are straps or other equipment used to secure the load? Securing the load properly can prevent it from falling off during transportation.

Heavy lifting requires the right tools
Moving a heavy cardboard box of goods? Find out what it weighs - and if it's heavy - use a lifting device to move the box. That way, you'll take care of your back - it should last for many years to come.

Visibility on the road
Working in an area where trucks also drive? Wear a reflective shirt/vest - that way you'll be much more visible to the truck driver - and have reduced the risk of being hit by a truck.

Your wellbeing is important
Stop and assess your own workload and wellbeing. If you feel overwhelmed, take the time to talk to your manager or a colleague about it. Recognizing and responding to psychological stress is important for your wellbeing.

Offer a helping hand
You're walking up the stairs and meet a colleague with a coffee cup in one hand and a laptop in the other! So, STOP them and offer to carry some of it - so they have one hand free for the handrail - it makes it much easier to prevent a fall.

Be aware of your surroundings
You have a meeting in one of the meeting rooms - on your way into the room you almost trip on a loose wire on the floor! STOP right there - secure the cord if possible - and take 1 minute to report a near miss - this is how you help protect yourself and your colleague from a potential future accident.

Your wellbeing is important

Avoid electric shock
Are you about to perform work near electricity? First check that the cables are not live - make sure with a measurement. By checking this, you can avoid getting shocked. There is always a risk associated with electric shocks.

Be aware of your surroundings
When you park your service vehicle and it's been slippery, stop and think before you get out of the car. Take the necessary time to assess the surface before you continue.

Use the approved equipment
Do you need a ladder? First check if the ladder is approved and if the ladder is in good condition. That way you can take precautions before starting work.
